Project objectives and methodology

Development of a 120-hour curriculum, which will qualify students, teachers, trainers, social workers, farmers and educationalists in various aspects of Multifunctional Agriculture/Social Farming. The material will be developed in a modular design and offered in eight languages as an online teaching tool. It will be targeted at people who need extra occupational training.

Multifunctional Agriculture/Social Farming provides the opportunity to link partners across the sectors of agriculture, social services, health-care, justice and education. Via the focus groups, we will stress Multifunctional Agriculture/ Social Farming as an integrative tool which can be used not only for agricultural purposes, but also to provide other benefits; for example, old people are offered places to live in a rural farm environment, and prisons offer their prisoners work in forestry and agriculture.

Across Europe, several movements engaged in Social Farming activities are currently expanding. There is a demand for linking the existing Community of Practice Farming for Health ( to ongoing research and educational activities. The Competence Centres will try to provide this missing link on both a national and trans-national level.

Spreading Knowledge
The involvement of representatives from seven countries will ensure the dissemination of the curriculum across Europe. One Transnational Virtual Competence Centre and seven National Competence Centres will provide information on European activities concerning Multifunctional Agriculture and Social Farming.

Supporting rural areas
By qualifying people living in rural areas, we will support alternative options for work and income. We will also provide ideas for added value by cooperating with the  agriculture, social, health-care and education sectors. This multifunctionality enables the diversification of the income structure in marginal areas and advances the attractiveness of rural areas.
